ARE CONSOLES AND EXPENSIVE COMPUTER SET-UPS LIKE THE PC KILLING THE HOME
COMPUTER AS WE KNOW IT?
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
That was last month's TALKING POINT. As last month there's only two letters
received on the above topic that are worth printing which is a bit
disappointing but let's not talk about that for the next 20k, let's just see
what those two people had to say...

Dear POWER,
Thought I'd send in a comment on the question you asked in issue
23 of POWER about home computers being at risk due to becoming exspensive...
Well, I personally dont think so. I have been a trader of electrical goods
and then computer and console software for a good number of years and had to
pack it in due to disability but people won't buy anything if it's too high
a price and therefore the producers of computer software will have to start
to consider the average persons pocket if they want to continue to make
money out of us because if not they will be cutting their own throats.
I personally wish for them to continue with higher prices for computers such
as Amiga's and PC's, then maybe the original writers of decent software for
the Atari will come back to us once again as this machine is well known for
its flexibiltiy.
The old saying goes, "what goes around comes round" so to all ST owners
thinking of deserting us, go out and buy/try the other computers that cost
more but only do the same. The rest of us will still be here with our saved
cash and patiently await your return to tell us what we already know and
have known for years...Which is that the ST has a hell of a lot of life
left in it yet and as a home computer it will more than likely out-last the
rest....

Dear POWER,
With reference to the talking point in last months POWER I
decided to write and add my opinions about consoles and such.
First, I believe consoles such as the Megadrive are a complete waste of
space and money. The games are ridiculously priced with something like
Donkey Kong Junior being about sixty five quid. In actual fact the game
itself will have cost around 15-20 quid to put together. So it's obvious why
the companies are making a fortune and able to advertise on telly. Maybe the
console games are much better quality than ST games but after all, a game is
a game. You can complete it, like it or hate it, and it doesn't matter about
all this talk saying 32 megs of data and millions of colours. After all,
Lemmings doesn't have all this fancy stuff and look how popular that is.
Plus the point that you can only play games on consoles, and even then you're
limited. Something like Llamatron wouldn't appear on a console because who
would pay sixty five quid for something you can get for free on the ST?
There's also education games. People would probably not pay that much for
these kind of games so we don't see them. We get a larger variety of games
and programs on home computers. So with consoles your limited to arcade type
games all jazzed up with effects whilst theres no limit with computer games.
After all there's a lot more you can do with computers such as game playing,
art, programming, music and so on. I have a game called Superfrog on the
Amiga which is just as good as Sonic the Hedgehog on the megadrive.
As for more powerful computers taking over home computers. Well I can't see
that being successful. I went to see a contact who had just bought a PC. The
games were all jazzed up efforts and although its desktop was good. You
really need a proper set up to get the best out of it. Meaning a hard drive,
a special monitor, and lots of memory to start with. Did you know that
Mortal Combat 2 needs eight meg on the PC? It seems that computers are
trying to equal consoles but it's costing a lot of money. The PC is well
overpriced before you get all the stuff you need just to run it, and these
new computers are just the same. Seeing as I run a business myself I have
found that the ST caters for all my needs in this repect. It may not be as
powerful as the PC and that but it's a lot cheaper. In fact I read a letter
from a guy who bought a PC and it cost him 1500 quid just to get the set up
for what he wanted to do. The same set up would cost him just 500 quid on
the ST and he admited this as an expensive mistake.
So my opinion is, stick with an home computer. After all we were happy
enough with the spectrum and commerdore 64 and there's no need for loads of
jazzy effects unless you need what a PC can do. And as for consoles, they
are just a waste of money. Your kids would be better off with an ST or Amiga
and you wouldn't be out of pocket and falling mug to more pricey computers.

WAS THE BUY-OUT OF ST REVIEW BY ST FORMAT A GOOD THING OR A BAD THING AND
HOW DO YOU THINK IT WILL AFFECT THE ST?
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
That's the topic I would like you all to comment on for next months TALKING
POINT so please send in your views and opinions on it and let everyone know
what you think.
